Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011

There are some recent waste legislation updates that will affect some of our customers, please feel free to give this summary a read though and any question s please contact Janette at our head office to advise you:

1) Businesses are now required to confirm that they have applied the Waste Management Hierarchy when transferring waste

What is the ‘Waste Management Hierarchy’?

The ‘Waste Management Hierarchy’ framework has been set out by the EU and imposed by DEFRA to ensure that our waste is managed in the correct way – from waste prevention as the most favoured option to waste disposal as a final option.

Confirmation that you have applied the Waste Management Hierarchy is to be declared on the waste transfer note or hazardous waste consignment note.

You must also include on the waste transfer note the 2007 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Code of the person who is transferring the waste.

2) Registering as a Waste Carrier – The new 2011 regulations are introducing a two-tier system for waste carrier, broker and dealer registration

Upper Tier Registration:

* Upper tier registration is needed if you want to carry, broker or deal in other people’s controlled waste (inc commercial, industrial, household and hazardous waste)

* Also need to register as an upper tier carrier if you carry your own Construction and Demolition waste

* If you are currently registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier then you do not need to do anything – When your waste carrier or broker certificate is due to be renewed, it will be replaced by an upper tier waste certificate

* Lasts for 3 years

* Will have to pay a fee to register of renew

Lower Tier Registration:

* You need to register as a lower tier carrier if you only carry, broker or deal in – animal by-products, waste from mines and quarrys, waste from agricultural premises

* You need to register as a lower tier carrier if you carry, broker or deal in other people wastes and are – a waste collection, disposal or regulatory authority, a charity or voluntary organisation

Please note:- By the end of December 2013 you will also need to register as a lower tier carrier if you normally and regularly carry controlled waste produced by your own business

If you would like to know more about environmental legislation or about the 2011 updates then please email enquires@commercialrecycling.co.uk and we will be happy to help you.

Alternatively you can contact the Environment Agency at enquiries@environment-agency.gov.uk or visit http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/

Fantastic new lorry designs for Commercial Recycling to consider

The Directors of Commercial Recycling Ltd are this week facing the difficult challenge of picking a winner from all the Lorry colouring competition entries the company received at the 2011 Royal Bath and West Country Show.

In return for the chance to win Toy R Us vouchers the budding artists who entered the competition were asked to redesign and colour a picture of a Commercial recycling Lorry.

The colouring competition was only one part of the company’s trade stand, which was located in the shows Eco Zone Area. Other educational activities on the stand included bales of recycled material and regular presentations from the Companies own in-house recycling expert Janette Mariner.

“Our stand was a wonderful success and we were delighted that so many people were prepared to visit our stand to learn more about our recycling services and how recovered materials are reused. It is the 3rd year that we have exhibiting at the show and we continue to be delighted by the response that our stand receives from the show visitors. ” Steve Chapple, Commercial Director, Commercial Recycling Ltd

Food Waste Recycling Successfully Launched At Bournemouth’s Hotel & Catering Show

Staff and Directors of Commercial Recycling are expecting to be very busy after a successful launch of their new Food Waste recycling service.

Marketing of this much needed form of waste management culminated at the Bournemouth Hotel and Catering show on the 15th and 16th of March.

The overwhelmingly positive response Commercial Recycling received during the show was not totally unexpected because their research had illustrated that hospitality businesses are concerned about food waste.

“I am delighted with the level of interest this service has received because as a recycling company we are highly motivated to provide affordable waste management services that divert increasing amounts of waste from Landfill.” Ian Mariner, Director, Commercial Recycling

Investments made by Commercial Recycling have also ensured that their food waste recycling customers in Dorset, Somerset and Bristol will receive brand new wheelie bins and biodegradable bags.

Commercial Recycling have also invested in a new food waste recycling lorry, which allows food and glass waste to be segregated and collected at the same time. This will be ideal for managing the waste of businesses such as hotels, restaurants, cafes and campsites.
